How to set up a Google Tag Manager Account and Container

Introduction

These instructions explain how to set up a Google Tag Manager (GTM) Account and Container, so that you can add the Container to your site or app. GTM allows you to easily add and manage code snippets on your site or app for 3rd party services (like Google Analytics and AdSense), and use structured data to improve SEO and usability.

Requirements

  1. A Google Account.

Instructions

Time needed: 5 minutes.

  1. Go to the Google Tag Manager site.

    Go to https://tagmanager.google.com/.
    If you’re not already logged in, enter the email or phone number associated with your Google Account, click Next, then enter your password and click Next.Google Account Password field and Next button - screenshot

  2. Click Create Account.

  3. Complete the Add a New Account step.

    Complete the Account Name, Country, Share data anonymously with Google and others, Container name and Target platform fields, and click Create.Add a New Account step - screenshot

  4. Accept the Google Tag Manager Terms of Service Agreement.

  5. Close the Install Google Tag Manager popup.

    If you want to install Google Tag Manager on you site or app by adding the code snippet manually, make a note of the code in the Paste this code… and Additionally, past this code… sections.You can view this code at any point in the future by clicking on the GTM-… link at the top right of the page.

  6. Make a note of the Google Tag Manager Container ID.

    If you want to install Google Tag Manager on you site or app using a plugin or extension, make a note of the Google Tag Manager Container ID. This is shown at the top right and starts with GTM-…Google Tag Manager Container ID value - screenshot

  7. Start using the Google Tag Manager Container.
