How to set up Google Analytics in Google Tag Manager

Introduction

These instructions explain how to set up Google Analytics in Google Tag Manager (GTM), so that you can manage Analytics on your site or app via GTM. This can simplify ongoing management of 3rd party services which can be controlled by GTM (e.g. Analytics and AdSense).

Requirements

  1. A Google Tag Manager Account. If you don’t already have one, see How to set up a Google Tag Manager Account and Container.
  2. A Google Analytics Tracking ID. If you don’t already have one, see How to set up a Google Analytics Account and Tracking ID.

Skill Level

Basic knowledge of browsers.

Instructions

Time needed: 5 minutes.

  1. Go to the Google Tag Manager site.

    Go to https://tagmanager.google.com/.
    If you’re not already logged in, enter the email or phone number associated with your Google Account, click Next, then enter your password and click Next.

  2. Open the relevant Container.

    Click the name of the Container you want to use for Google Analytics.

  3. Click Tags.

  4. Click New.

  5. Click Choose a tag type to begin set-up.

  6. Click Google Analytics: Universal Analytics.

  7. Start the Tag Configuration step.

    In the Track Type drop down, leave Pageview selected.

  8. Complete the Variable Configuration step.

    In the Tracking ID field enter your Google Analytics Tracking ID.
    In the Cookie Domain field, leave the value as auto.

  9. Confirm the Variable Name.

  10. Click Choose a trigger to make this tag fire.

  11. Click All Pages.

  12. Save the Tag.

  13. Confirm the Tag name.

  14. Submit the changes to the Container.

  15. Complete the Submission Configuration step.

    In the Version Name field enter a name for the changes made (for reference).
    In the Version Description field, enter a brief description of the changes (for reference).
